Callan Park, Rozelle
Sshhhhh….Just off Balmain Road, Leichhardt, is an inner west, harbourside secret and one of my most favorite swimming places of all – Callan Park Dog Beach.
For an inner-Sydney harbour beach, it is usually very clean and very quiet apart from the occasional gaggle of Labradors that seem to inhabit every dog beach, I go to these days.
Recently returned to the people of NSW, you can take in a piece of history along with fine art, rowing, soccer, cricket and the occasional bride and her entourage.
With historic sandstone steps down to the beach, and surrounded by beautiful Sydney harbour sandstone cliffs, you can disappear from view and quietly row your weather beaten boat out to your weekend cruiser for a jaunt under the newly-renovated Iron Cove Bridge, past Birkenhead Point and the Louisa Rd Birchgrove mansions, towards Sydney Heads.
Unfortunately, like all open parks and spaces in the inner west, developers are circling like Sydney Harbour bull sharks during their February estuary breeding period. Help keep Callan Park free of greedy politicians, developers and save it for us local puppies. Visit the Friends of Callan Park website and bark as loudly as you can at the next meeting or donate to the cause with your hard earned puppy-$$$.
I give Callan Park Dog Beach 9/10.
